FALL SEMESTER

FALCONS FLEW IN

The annual return of students to SAU’s campus consists of dozens of student leaders and student-athletes volunteering to greet students, help carry boxes and luggage, and answer questions. Move-in kicked off Fresh Falcon Week, a university-wide effort to celebrate and engage incoming and returning students. It provided opportunities for students to meet each other, engage with resources, and grow their SAU pride.

We met our 2023 Presidential Scholars

The Presidential Scholars Program is a vibrant community of high-achieving students at Saint Augustine’s University (SAU). With nearly thirty students in the program, students connect with faculty, participate in numerous activities, and obtain leadership and research opportunities on campus. The Presidential Scholars Program is a community of learners focused on leadership, academic excellence, and community service. Meet all six of the incoming Presidential Scholars who joined SAU this fall.

Reaching new heights

Students at Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) are taking their research to the next level thanks to a $147,216 planning grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The two-year grant from NSF’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program will support undergraduate research this semester by developing two technology centers on the university’s campus, the Virtual Reality STEM Learning Center (VRSLC) and the STEM Communication Resource Center (SCRC).

Grant awards surge 85%

Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) students and faculty are now more equipped than ever to find solutions to real-world problems. The university completed almost $11 million in grant funding in fiscal year 2023, an 85 percent jump from the previous fiscal year, thanks to an increased focus on research.

Cycling to victory

The SAU Cycling team hosted a series of campus cyclocross races as part of the Berger Hardware Bikes Cross Central Series over the weekend. Over 100 riders competed in multiple heats and divisions on a muddy and rainy course that circumvented the north end of campus and the football stadium. Race distances and lengths varied from 30 minutes to 60 minutes. Racers faced various obstacles, including mud and gravel pits, steep climbs, hairpin turns, and drenching rains.

SAU WELCOMES A NEW LEADER

The arrival of new leadership at Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) aims to continue moving forward one of North Carolina’s most prominent historic black colleges/universities (HBCUs) with unwavering vision and confidence. The university’s Board of Trustees announces Dr. Marcus H. Burgess’s appointment to Interim President.

“I am deeply honored to step into the role of Interim President at Saint Augustine’s University and am committed to advancing its mission of excellence in education,” said Dr. Burgess. “I am committed to ushering in a new era of stability and growth for the university, ensuring its continued accreditation and fostering a culture of transparency and collaboration. I stand with the dedicated faculty, staff, and students as we navigate these challenges and build a promising future for SAU.”

SPRING SEMESTER

SAU CELEBRATES 157 YEARS

The 2024 Founders’ Day Convocation holds great significance for SAU, especially during this critical time in our university’s history,” said SAU Interim President Marcus H. Burgess. “It is another opportunity to reflect and build upon our historical relationship with the Raleigh community. We are honored to have Carmen Cauthen as the keynote speaker, whose expertise and commitment to community engagement embody our vision for the future of SAU.”

Saint Augustine’s University named 373 full-time students to its Dean’s List for the Fall 2023 semester.

SAU Excelled

One of The Triangle’s historically black colleges/universities (HBCUs) stood tall in a recent report featuring North Carolina’s 36 private universities. Saint Augustine’s University (SAU), a proud North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) member, achieved remarkable success in NCICU’s 2022-2023 Statistical Report. The report highlights SAU’s outstanding performance, placing it in the top three for maintaining enrollment from 2018 to 2022.

BREAKING BARRIERS

Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) achieved significant recognition in the latest 2024 U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) rankings last fall, reflecting a remarkable rise in critical categories. The university climbed 20 spots from 65th to 45th in the Social Mobility category, ranking 86 out of 132 universities for best schools in the southern region. Furthermore, SAU secured the 69th position out of the top 79 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), marking a commendable achievement.

More support has resulted in another big win for one of North Carolina’s historically black colleges/universities (HBCUs). Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) has once again showcased its commitment to excellence and community support by securing a $60,000 Campus Improvement Grant after finishing fifth among universities with a student enrollment of 1,200 or less in Home Depot’s prestigious Retool Your School competition. This momentous achievement comes at a critical juncture for SAU, whose resilience amidst financial and accreditation challenges has captured the attention of national audiences.

SAU GRADUATES LARGEST CLASS IN A DECADE

With nearly 150 students, this graduating class is the largest in almost a decade, a testament to the resilience and perseverance of both students and the university. SAU’s Class of 2024 is a testament to excellence and diversity, with 2 veterans, 4 first-generation college students, 13 presidential scholars, 47 student-athletes, more than half (54%) graduating with a 3.0 GPA or better, over a third (35%) with honors, and students from 16 states and three countries.
