Demetria Buie, Class of 2001

My name is Demetria A. Buie, I am the daughter of Malcom and Ruth Buie of Maxton, North Carolina. I am a 2001 graduate of Saint Augustine’s College (University) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. In addition, I am a 2007 of North Carolina Central University it was there I earned a master’s in Community Agency Counseling and later in 2020, I earn a master’s in Social Work. I am currently a student at Capella University where I am pursuing my doctorate in Social Work.

Since my matriculation at Saint Augustine’s College, I have dedicated myself to giving back and improving the community that poured into me as a youth both professionally and personally.

Currently, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. I work with an array of individuals from various cultural backgrounds that are diagnosed with mental illnesses ranging from mild to persistent. I provide my patients with the necessary tools to combat their symptoms in a healthy manner decreasing the chances of hospitalization. In addition, I provide my patients with the encouragement in knowing that despite having a mental illness it is not a prison sentence but symptoms can be controlled.

On a personal level, I wanted to do more for the community that assisted in shaping me into the woman I am today. In 2021, I founded two nonprofits, Precious Ivies and Rising Sphinx. Both entities provides mentoring services to youth ages 6-18 years old. Besides offering mentoring services, Precious Ivies and Rising Sphinx provides youth the opportunity to explore the world outside of their community.

Our students have been provided the opportunity to explore various HBCU’s within North Carolina including both my alma maters to increase awareness and interest. For those students that are interested in trade, we have partnered with various entrepreneurs within the community that provide apprenticeship opportunities for the students.

These are just some of the things that I have been focused on since my days at St. Augustine’s. I am very humble and grateful for this opportunity as a 45 under 45 nominee. It my hope that I have represented the institution that provided me the foundation to what I am currently doing well.
